An American fraternal order, the Elks date back to 1868. One area they have focused on is helping military veterans. The Elks are also a part of the national advisory committee for the Veterans Administration (VA) voluntary service program, and feature various veteran volunteer programs.
The Elks has an adopt-a-veteran program where each member assists a chosen veteran who does not have family members and is in a health care or assisted-living facility. The member visits the veteran and helps providing for his needs.
There is also the Elks Volunteer Service, which stations volunteers in VA hospitals and facilities across the country to help in caring for veterans. Meanwhile, the Freedom Grants initiative funds local Elk lodges' charitable activities focused on veterans and active military personnel in their communities. These grants are used for veterans' education, accommodation, family assistance, and health care needs.
The foundation also assists homeless veterans by getting them into their own homes and providing them with welcome home kits consisting of furnishings, kitchenware, and cleaning supplies.
